Having Trouble
Making Sense of Math?

You’re not alone. I’m here to help!

I work to help students with the math they’re currently doing in their classroom. Oftentimes this means helping them with their homework, but that work is just a vehicle we use so I can help them see the big picture and how this skill fits into all the rest. It’s a great time to help them see patterns and broaden their knowledge beyond the paper in front of them. A brain that recognizes patterns is like an organized closet: we know where to put new information and we have access to it once it’s stored away.

Rebecca’s Path to Learning Math

Recently I met a new student. This student had a great deal of anxiety about math and math tutoring in general. He had experienced negative interactions with earlier math teachers in the school as well as an earlier math tutor. Yet, when he left, this is the text I got from his dad (texting typos removed):

“… even though it’s just your first visit, I could hear you guys laughing and having fun, and when (the boy) came down he was happy and had a big smile from ear to ear. He said you were way different than the last lady …”

This is typical of the response I get from parents.

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy and style

Humans should enjoy each other’s company and learning should be fun. That is simply woven into my personality. My favorite thing to do is laugh. My favorite phrases are “That makes sense” and “Okay, that’s easy.”

Instruction is tailored towards the learner’s needs and learning style. I excel at breaking skills down to their simplest forms and presenting it to each individual in a way that will make sense to that person.

Teaching Experience

Experience

I’m good at math (up to and including pre-calc) and I’m really good at teaching.

I have a Masters in Special Education (Syracuse University, 1991) and a decade in the public school system. I prefer the one-on-one of private tutoring. Most of my skills come from trial and error, and fine tuning myself as a teacher for many years.

Kids Want Help With More Than Math

Life is more than just math. I relate well to the kids, especially as they grow into teenagers. I listen to them: from their frustrations to their celebrations, I’m there for them and most of them stay with me year after year (which is why it’s hard to get in with me).

PA Math Tutor teaches many levels of math.

Testimonial for Rebecca's Path to Learning Math

I have been tutored by Rebecca for about two years now in the subject of math. Math has never been a strong point for me, but Rebecca is always able to take the time to break it down for me so I can understand it, while also making it enjoyable. She is so patient and so kind with everybody she meets. She is always willing to make time for anything you need, even if it’s a hug! Rebecca didn’t just give me the answers to math, she explained why I got that answer and how to get it by myself. She also taught me different strategies that they don’t teach in school so I could see it my own way and feel confident in my answers and math abilities. I would always recommend Rebecca to anyone who is struggling with math, she is an amazing teacher AND friend.

Our son was struggling with math and needed extra help in high school.  As parents, we were unable to assist him with Algebra and Geometry.  Rebecca understood his challenges and connected with him on a level that his school teachers couldn’t.  She gave him the skills and confidence that he needed to succeed in class.  Our son looked forward to his weekly tutoring session with Rebecca throughout the year. He couldn’t have made it through high school math courses without her.

Rebecca gave me a place to spread my math wings.  The math at school was boring.  I learned how math applies in the world and why it is important. I learned a ton of math by designing my clubhouse: Real math not just from a book. She taught me more than math. I learned to be confident, organized and creative in my thinking.  I feel ready to tackle challenging math with the “tool belt” of strategies she helped me create.  Rebecca is kind but can push you gently to learn.  Rebecca is awesome.

Thanks for your continued hard work lifting my daughter up in math.  You have really lifted her self esteem, and her confidence in math, and created a math genius!  My daughter has gone from being below state standards to exceeding state standards, and with her disabilities I could not have helped her in the way you are helping her.  For as long as she is in school/college you will be a key figure on my daughter’s education team.

Rebecca was and still is a Godsend for my son and I. We met Rebecca for the first time when my son was in second grade. He was doing poorly in math and my mother and I decided we needed to find a tutor for him. The school was helpful in some ways but not enough for me or my mother’s sake. So, my mother noticed an ad for a math tutor from Rebecca. We met with her and my son started weekly tutoring. She and my son hit it off right away. She found a way to reach him and taught him the basic math concepts at first. We then had him work with her during the summer and continue to build on his math skills. She also worked with him on his reading and writing.

By the time he started school that year he was caught up with his class and able to continue to work with the class at their level. He was very happy to be able to be a part of his class and not have to be treated as a special person. He really hated that feeling and was miserable when he had to leave his class and go to a special class. But working with Rebecca for one year, he was able to stay with his class.

They continued to work together a few more summers and weekly every year until he graduated from high school in 2019. She became part of our family. She really was able to reach my son and teach him math, reading/writing, and other life experiences. She does not just focus on the subject that the child is struggling with, she focuses on the whole child. She finds ways to reach them and teach them that is outside the box. She loves the challenge, loves the subjects, but most of all loves the young person she is working with.

She treated my son with patience and understanding that most adults do not take time to do. My son is now heading off to college and knows that his friendship and tutor will be there by his side whenever he needs help.

Rebecca is more than a tutor she is also a friend. I cannot thank her enough.
